The setting for Final Fantasy Versus XIII reflects our world today, and it's "ugly issues". Versus is darker, more close to home emotional story, or so that is the vision Square Enix has told.

The main character in Versus is a Prince, the heir to the throne, the thrown to the last Kingdom where the crystal was held. The Kingdom is modern and advanced much further the outside world, to the point that they've basically isolated themselves within. The city nation is said to be protected by a Magic Order, whom must stand against an invasion in the Kingdom. This fight over the last crystal is said to only be the beginning of a new generation.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII shares many similarities with the story of Hamlet. With even a quote from the story in the original trailer. Little else is know about the story of Versus at this point.

The weapons that Noctis wields are multiple, ranging from swords to spears to lances. He can control them with telekinesis (through the power of the Crystal), using them for both attack and defense. Nomura has stated that each weapon will have a different usage and is not directly limited by normal standards of attack; for instance, some weapons will also be usable as shields (as seen in the trailers). He also has the ability to teleport or to suddenly move at a high speed, though it is unknown what role this skill will have in the actual gameplay.

Noctis's personality is different from any other character in the Final Fantasy franchise (including that of Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII and Squall Leonhart of Final Fantasy VIII), one that Nomura had wanted to try out for a long time.In the past, protagonists were given strong personalities while the distinctive ones were delegated to the supporting cast, but Nomura states Noctis's idiosyncrasies mark a departure from this tradition.Although his character is said to be hard to define given his complexities,a good measure of his personality can be sensed from his first meeting with Stella. Despite his cold and unsociable appearance, Noctis hides his shyness underneath a fa?ade of coolness in front of her.However, he acts more openly around his three friends, usually smiling,a testament to Nomura's statement that "he is not the least bit a silent, gloomy little boy."
